About Us

Music Makers is designed to create opportunities for all Australians to be able to play music, regardless of age or reason for playing.

Music Makers is the non-commercial arm of the Australian Music Association, the industry body for the music products sector, and is supported by contributions from a significant number of wholesalers who are members of the Australian Music Association.

In 2001, the Australian Music Association commissioned Australian Attitudes to Music, a national research study looking at who plays instruments in Australia, why they play, how they learn and a range of attitudes to music. From this it was revealed that 88% of the population wish they could play. Yet we know that barely a tenth of that number actually do!

So what is going wrong?

Further review showed that active music making has a number of challenges facing it. The Stevens Report indicates that only around 23% of State school students have access to music.

As an adult, where would you go to play music for recreation? And why would you even think about it? Where would you go to find music for health benefits?

In every community across Australia the tennis courts and swimming pools and cricket pitches are visible and busy. But where would you go to play music? Music Makers wants to make playing music as accessible and visible as playing sport. You can play sport for performance excellence or as a vocation, for recreation, or for health benefits. Music is no different, but where are the ‘musical tennis courts’ for all of these options?

Music Makers is committed to helping create those ‘musical tennis courts’ so all Australians can be involved in music, regardless of age or reason for playing.
